Omron HEM-650 Wrist w/ APS Review — Compact, Accurate, Easy to Use
This kind of device is more suited to individuals who want to take a BP reading on their own without getting help from others.
Generally, you fasten the strap on your left wrist and press the start button. Immediately after pressing the start button, your left pointing finger must touch your right shoulder. Remember: if you place it on your right wrist, your right pointing finger should touch your left shoulder and vice-versa if you are using your left wrist. This will place the blood pressure monitor in the same level as your heart. You will hear the Position Sensor alarm sound as you get near the ideal position for the BP monitor. You’ll notice that the wrist strap will gently get tighter as it inflates automatically. Wait for it to finish getting a reading and it will show on the screen. That’s it! That’s how easy it is to use. It has a built-in memory of up to 90 readings. When you visit your doctor, he or she can browse all the previous readings and can give you a better assessment of your heart condition.
If you happen to have a reading that is dangerously high or above 135/85, the IntelliSense feature will show a flashing heart icon on the screen. This means you are currently having a hypertension that can lead to a heart attack. You should immediately visit your doctor.
For a more accurate reading, you can take three readings within 10 minutes and the HEM-650 will average it for you.
Pros:
- Five year guarantee and clinically proven to be accurate.
- This product passed the validation standards and testing of internationally renowned organizations such as European Society of Hypertension (ESH) and the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instruments (AAMI).
- Can be used on your left or right wrist.
- Gives systolic, diastolic and pulse readings.
- APS ensures a reliable measurement every time.
- Can detect irregular rhythm of the heart during measurement.
- Stores 90 readouts in memory with date and time of reading.
- With plastic storage case that you can use when travelling.
Cons:
Ideally, this device is meant to be used by only one person. The 90 readings that it can store in its memory should be the readings for the same person. Make sure you have written on paper your own reading and keep track manually if you are planning to share this with other family members. Otherwise, you will find it confusing if the previous reading was yours or not. There are other models especially on the upper arm that can store different sets of readout for different people. You can download and print a Blood Pressure Tracker [pdf] from Omron America. It can help you keep track of your BP readings. See download link below.
Value for Money:
The Omron HEM-650 Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor with Advanced Positioning Sensor (APS®) is actually a very good value for the price. It is comparable to other BP monitors that cost considerably more.
Tips:
There are other variants (the blue one) of this BP monitor that only holds 60 readings instead of 90. Make sure you are buying the latest version with APS or Advanced Positioning Sensor. That’s the new feature that will tell you if you have the device in the right position or not. No matter how accurate the device is, if you place it in the wrong position the reading will be off by several points.
